Truck 4 History
On March 1, 1896, Truck Company “D” was organized at 219 M Street N.W., equipped with a LaFrance/Hayes 75-foot aerial ladder truck from the same year. On July 6, 1906, a significant change occurred when all truck companies transitioned from using letters to numbers for their identification; Truck Company “D” was redesignated as Truck Company No. 4. During the period of 1906 to 1909, the D.C. Fire Department underwent a reorganization of its battalions, with the first battalion being quartered at the No. 4 Truck House.
On July 26, 1974, Truck Company No. 4, along with Ambulance No. 5, relocated to join Engine Company No. 6 at the newly constructed firehouse at 1300 New Jersey Ave. N.W.
Today, the dedicated members of Truck Company No. 4 handle approximately 3,500 runs each year. They are committed to safeguarding the Shaw neighborhood and its surrounding areas. Like other D.C.F.D. Companies, Truck Company No. 4 boasts a rich historical legacy, having played instrumental roles in responding to some of the most significant incidents in the department’s history.
